Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 389 sailing yacht

The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 389 is a recent addition to Jeanneau’s range of cruising yachts being released in 2015. Like the 35, 36i and 379 models, the 389 offers 3 double cabins and thanks to the redesigned transom and hull shape has a remarkably spacious interior for her length.

The Sun Odyssey 389 follows the interior design of the other new generation ‘xx9’ Sun Odyssey yachts (379, 409, 419, 439, 449, 469, 509 & 519) and provides a light and comfortable interior.

Like all the Sun Odysseys, the 389 is a fast and seaworthy cruising yacht and an excellent choice for comfortable family cruising.

Sailing

The Sun Odyssey 389 can be comfortably managed by a crew of two but is large enough to give a family or group of friends some space to themselves. She sails well and continues the reputation Jeanneau enjoy of building quick and nimble cruising yachts providing entertaining, yet safe and stable sailing.

Like the other ‘xx9’ yachts, the 389 uses a German mainsheet system, meaning the mainsheet can be controlled by the helmsman making single-handed sailing easy. The 389 also benefits from twin wheels and unlike the larger ‘xx9’ Sun Odyssey yachts, has twin rudders, excellent for those who enjoy their sailing ‘with a heal on’.

Equipment

Our Sun Odyssey 389 yachts are equipped with twin wheel steering, roller reefing genoa and slab-reefed mainsail with lazy jacks & sail bag and chartplotter. The mainsail uses single-line reefing with reefs 1 & 2 rigged.

Instrumentation includes twin binnacle compasses, speed, log and echo sounder instruments in the cockpit and a GPS, chartplotter, DSC VHF radio & EPIRB in the main saloon. Charts and pilot guides are provided.

Like our 349 yachts, the 389 specification includes a Simrad SonicHub marine audio system with iPod & MP3 docking station. The system also includes a remote control and speakers in both the main cabin and cockpit, allowing you to listen and control your music as you sail.

Accommodation

The Sun Odyssey 389 offers a main saloon, three cabins and a single toilet/shower room (‘heads’ in sailing talk) with hot water. Each cabin has a double berth giving six berths, plus the saloon seats are convertible to berths although we would only recommend this for children. Each cabin has a hanging wardrobe.

The galley includes a sink, top-entry fridge, twin-burner cooker with grill and plenty of storage both behind the worktop & cooker and below the sink.

Outside the cockpit has teak lazerette seats with bimini and external loudspeakers connected to the CD/radio.

Internal layout

The Sun Odyssey 389 provides a single heads to port, a forepeak cabin with hatch onto the foredeck and two stern cabins. There is a chart table to port in front of the heads with control panel, GPS, DSC VHF radio, EPIRB and CD/radio player.
