Round Poros race application & results

Every year Greek Sails celebrate the end of the season by organising a weekend of sail racing for local & visiting sailors.

Everybody is welcome, so if you have a yacht or you fancy an end-of-season yacht charter with a difference, this is an excellent opportunity to have some fun.

The Round the Island (of Poros) Race

Everybody is welcome to join the Greek Sails Round the Island of Poros race weekend; Greek Sails customers, workers and sailors from around the area. So if you have your own yacht in the area or you fancy an end-of-season yacht charter with a difference, this is an excellent opportunity to have some fun and pit your sailing abilities against others without any of it being taken too seriously.

The weekend is organised into two days of sail racing, one around the ‘cans’ in Poros bay on the Saturday followed on the Sunday with a race anti-clockwise around the island of Poros. The Saturday evening is always spent in a local bar with the prize-giving for the first day’s racing and then on the Sunday evening following the actaul ‘Round the Island race’, there is a quayside barbeque with Greek-sized portions of food and drink and a second prize-giving for the Sunday’s race winner plus the overall weekend winner.

The Round Poros race 2011 was held over the weekend Sat/Sun 29 & 30-Oct-2011. The results were:

The ‘round the cans’ Gadi Katz Cup race was held in Askeli bay on the south east corner of the island on Sat 29-Oct-2010. The course length was 5.60nm.

The ‘round the cans’ Thomas Cup race was held in Askeli bay on the south east corner of the island on Sat 30-Oct-2010. The course length was 5.60nm. Some boats suffered with the wind dying away towards the end of the race, pushing out their completion times.

The Greek Sails Round Poros Cup 2010

Due to very light winds, no yachts completed the circuit around the island of Poros, running out of time with a 5 hour race time limit. Consequently all yachts did not finish (‘DNF’).

The actual race around the island of Poros, the Greek Sails Round Poros Cup, took place the following day on Sun 1-Nov-2009. Quite unlike the previous day and uncharacteristically for the time of year, the race was run under dark skies and a cold northerly F8, causing a significant number of boats to withdraw from the race.
